An Act of Parliament in 1956 established the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) as an autonomous institution of national importance and defined its objectives and functions. By virtue of this Act, the Institute awards its own medical degrees and other academic distinctions. The degrees awarded by the Institute under the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Act are recognized medical qualifications for the purpose of the Indian Medical Council Act and notwithstanding anything contained therein, are deemed to be included in the first schedule of that Act, entitling the holders to the same privileges as those attached to the equivalent awards from the recognized Universities of India.
The aim of the Society is to foster the study of inherited metabolic disorders and related topics, The Society, founded in 1963, exists to promote exchange of ideas between professional workers in different disciplines who are interested in inherited metabolic disease.
The researchers in the field of pediatric gastroenterology have brought India to the world map in various diseases like Indian Childhood cirrhosis (ICC), Wilson disease, neonatal cholestasis syndrome(NCS), Celiac diseases, extrahepatic portal venous obstruction, oral rehydration solution(ORS) and its modification, zinc in the management of acute diarrhea, endotherapy in the portal hypertension, liver transplantation etc.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi, the apex body in India for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research, is one of the oldest medical research bodies in the world. The Governing Body of the Council is presided over by the Union Health Minister. It is assisted in scientific and technical matters by a Scientific Advisory Board comprising eminent experts in different biomedical disciplines.
MERD India is the very first initiative in the country to provide informative
support to parents as well as, to promote awareness regarding the Inborn Errors of
Metabolism & Rare Diseases.
MERD India aims to provide moral, yet informative support to the parents of such
children. We also intend to campaign for screening of newborn children in India,
so as to enable detection of IEM conditions at an early stage. Our vision is to
have a forum of like minded individuals who can promote & help in spreading
awareness regarding Inborn Errors of Metabolism & Rare Diseases and their earliest
possible detection, thereby saving and supporting as many lives as possible.
6 years of relevant experience in handling parent support group from Jaipur,
Rajasthan, active participation in various events organized to create awareness
for Inborn Errors of Metabolism and to campaign for newborn screening in India has
helped us mentor 800+ people through MERD India by providing help and necessary
information and support.
In 1962, a group of like-minded nutritionists, dietitians and workers in the allied health fields resolved to form a scientific body to highlight the importance of dietetics and nutrition in the maintenance of health, and in the prevention and treatment of diseases. Thus, the Indian Dietetic Association was founded, with Prof. Kalyan Bagchi as Secretary and Dr. C. Gopalan as President The association was affiliated to the International congress of Dietetics in 1975.
The Indian Academy of Pediatrics was established in 1963 at Mumbai. It has 26 State, and 303 District, and City level branches. The Academy has promoted different specialties in the field of Pediatrics through it various Chapters. One of the major activities undertaken by the IAP since its inception has been to organize Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs by holding conferences, symposia, lectures and other meets all over the country.
The National Neonatology Forum (NNF) came into existence in 1980 through the initiative of a handful of leading pediatricians working in the field of neonatology. NNF is actively networking with the partners and stakeholders like Government of India and State governments; International agencies including WHO, UNICEF, DFID; NGOs like BPNI; and Professional bodies like IAP, IMA, FOGSI to improve newborn care in the country.
